The History of Sports

Sports

While there is a high degree of competitiveness in sports, the majority of them are governed by a set of rules and customs. The rules and customs are intended to maintain fairness between competitors and to make adjudications of the winner consistent. While physical events are an obvious way of determining the winner, sports also involve the use of judges. Judges score specific elements of a sporting performance, resulting in objective and subjective measurements.

The modern games of basketball, tennis, and volleyball are based on games first invented by James Naismith and William Morgan. These two games were originally developed in New England to fill a perceived need for indoor sports during the long, cold winters. As time progressed, they were played worldwide and eventually became the most popular sports in the world. In the early twentieth century, sports also evolved to reflect the changing social and political climates of the world.

Although no one knows exactly when sports started, children have always been involved in some form of play. Even prehistoric art depicts hunters hunting with joy. Ancient civilizations admired the discipline of hunting and made the pursuit of prey an art form. However, the advent of Christianity led to the decline of hunting as a social activity and a religious practice. Although this might seem a bit far-fetched, it is nevertheless the case that the game became a major part of daily life in many societies and communities.
